Q: Why should I consider BOTOX® injections for cosmetic purposes?
A: As we age, we develop wrinkles and creases on the face, partly due to the action of certain facial muscles on our skin. These muscles produce creases by the constant pull they exert on our skin. Injections of BOTOX® into these specific muscles causes a temporary paralysis, which weakens the muscle. This allows the skin to relax and eliminates the wrinkle.

Q: What is BOTOX®?
A: BOTOX® (Botulinum A Toxin) is a purified protein than has been approved by the FDA since 1989 as a safe and effective treatment for eyelid spasms, muscle spasms causing crossed eyes, as well as facial spasms. Plus it has been shown to be an effective non-surgical treatment for facial lines and wrinkles.

Q: Why choose BOTOX® over other procedures?
A: Prominent facial lines may be viewed as expressions of anger, pain, sadness, etc. Besides BOTOX®, there are many other remedies available from which to choose, for example facelifts, peels, and tissue fillers such as collagen and skin creams. What must be determined is the best procedure for the particular situation. For instance, stubborn lines on the forehead and crows feet are very resistant to most treatments. A filler agent such as collagen will only be a temporary fix to smooth out those types of wrinkles. BOTOX®, however, can greatly decrease or totally erase the lines by allowing the muscles to be without significant tension. This enables the skin to relax, resulting in a smooth appearance.

Q: How does BOTOX® work?
A: Normally your brain sends electrical messages to your muscles so they can contract and move. The electrical message is transmitted to the muscle by a substance called acetylcholine. BOTOX® works to block the release of acetylcholine so that the muscle doesn't receive the message to contract. The result is that the muscle spasms stop or are greatly reduced after using BOTOX®.

Q: How is BOTOX® administered?
A: BOTOX® is injected into the muscle. Your doctor will determine the muscle(s) in need of treatment.

Q: Does the treatment hurt?
A: A very fine needle is used for the one to three injections that are usually given per muscle. Some patients report minor and temporary discomfort from treatment.

Q: When does BOTOX® start to work?
A: You will usually see the effects of BOTOX® within three days. The maximize benefit is reached in one or two weeks.

Q: How long does the effect last?
A: The relief you will feel from a single treatment of BOTOX® will normally be sustained for three months. You will notice a gradual fading of its effects. At this point you will return to your doctor for your next treatment. Usually, BOTOX® treatment is required only three or four times a year. Symptoms may vary throughout the course of the condition, and so the degree of relief and duration of effect varies from person to person. Consult your doctor, who has special knowledge about how to achieve the best possible results with BOTOX® for your individual case.

Q: How long can I be treated with BOTOX®?
A: Treatment with BOTOX® can typically be repeated indefinitely. BOTOX® has been used over ten years worldwid, and acceptable safety in long-term treatment has been well established.

Q: Is BOTOX® right for me?
A: Ask your doctor if BOTOX® is the right treatment for you. BOTOX® should not be used during pregnancy, if you are nursing, or if you are taking certain medications. Only your physician can determine the best course of therapy. The effects of BOTOX® may be increased with the use of certain antibiotics or other drugs that interfere with neuromuscular transmission. Q: What side effects may be experienced when using BOTOX®?
A: All medications have some side effects. With BOTOX®, side effects are usually transient and mild to moderate in nature. Some people notice temporary weakness of muscles or discomfort at the injection site.
